Herbal Coffee & Tea

Why I Am Sharing These Links

About a year ago, when I was trying to break my coffee habit I came upon some very unusual coffees and teas. What was unusual is that none of these “coffees” and “teas” contain any actual coffee from coffee beans or any kind of tea from tea leaves. They are completely herbal and caffeine free and are based mostly on chicory and/or dandelion root. And they have more nutrients and proven health benefits that coffee or tea — despite any of the Starbucks generated hype — could ever lay claim to.

(Please see my earlier article “Chicory Is Better Than Coffee” for more about the nutrients and health benefits of Chicory.)

The (woman owned) company that produces them is called Teeccino and they are true pioneers in the field of herbal beverages. Or as they put it, “Our Company: Inspired by a dream and the desire to preserve rain forests.”

What these coffees and teas contain (along with the chicory or dandelion) are ingredients like: Organic carob, organic barley, dates, orange peel, almonds, organic figs — just to name a few of the very broad range of flavors and tastes on offer from Teeccino. They are generally packaged either like coffee normally is or in tea bags.

I fell in love with these coffee/teas at first sip for three main reasons: 1. They taste wonderful, 2. They are caffeine free, 3. They do not have the acidity that coffee (and some teas) have which was hurting my stomach, my teeth, and my ability to sleep. And I might add a 4th reason: Their similarity to coffee makes the transition a lot easier…

I want to emphasize that these herbal coffees look and smell very much like regular coffee (but Teeccino tastes better in my opinion). Many of the teas seem very similar to caffeinated black teas, but generally Teeccino teas are roasted and are stronger and darker. (These teas are definitely nothing like the boring, bland herbal teas you often find on the grocery shelves). Some of these teas also have a coffee-like appearance and smell. And all of the Teeccino teas and coffees can be brewed just as strong as you ever liked your (regular) coffee.

My hope is that someday “not-coffee” and “not-tea” (like Teeccinos) will be offered everywhere as healthy alternatives to the caffeinated, acidified other stuff — the same way that Vegan options are now appearing in restaurants all over the world. I believe public health will be much better off for it. I know my own has been.
